The WFTO International Fair Trade Summit explored the movement’s role in the ethical marketplace, in combatting the global climate crisis, and more.
Over 300 fair trade leaders, buyers, and advocates came together at the 15th International Fair Trade Summit hosted by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). The WFTO celebrated its 30th anniversary at the summit, which took place in Lima, Peru from September 16-19.
30+ U.S and Canadian fair trade representatives attended, many of whom were from FTF member and allied organizations. FTF Executive Director Chris Solt facilitated a session during the plenary on the second day. This session was titled, “The New Ethical Market: A Future Full of Opportunities.” It featured Bená Burda of FTF member Maggie’s Organics as well as representatives from Avocadostore, Sasha Association of Craft Producers, and Greater Good.
Speakers from around the world presented during the plenaries, workshops, and sessions on many topics, including fair trade governance, cooperation among coops & fair trade, fair trade towns, new models to improve farmer income, trends & insights regarding ethical consumers, and big questions about fair trade’s future & impact. Participants also visited local artisans in Peru specializing in traditional and modern weaving, ceramics, silversmithing, and woodcrafting techniques.
The summit concluded with the WFTO General Meeting, where participants voted on outcomes following the previous days’ discussions. They elected Chris Solt to the WFTO Global Board along with three other new board members. They also elected Roopa Mehta of Sasha Association for Craft Producers (India) as the new WFTO president.
Members voted to redouble efforts to reduce CO2 emission, promote sustainable production, and eliminate waste & plastics. Read more about the fair trade movement’s commitment and call to action regarding the climate emergency here.
