Fair Trade Organizations Rally for Haiti

On Tuesday, January 12, Haiti was hit by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, the strongest in 200 years. The BBC and CBC reports fears of between 50,000 and 200,000 dead and 2 million homeless. Governments and aid agencies are working around the clock to distribute food, medicine, and other supplies while making ongoing appeals for financial contributions from organizations and international citizens.  

Several Fair Trade Federation members have joined the fight to support relief efforts in Haiti:
  • It's Cactus will contribute 100% of the profits from purchases of items made in Haiti to the earthquake victims.
  • Unity-Fair Trade Marketplace is donating 100% of proceeds from the sale of their Organic Cotton Unity Tees to Oxfam America.
  • SERRV International is collecting donations online for relief efforts and offering steady employment by selling products from Comite Artisanal Haitien
  • Global Exchange will be donating 10% of the total sales to Beyond Borders, one of their partner organizations that is dedicated to improving the living standards of artists, their families and their communities in Haiti.
  • BeadforLife is donating money from the sale of their recycled magazine bead jewelry to to the Robert Ford Foundation in support of their orphanages, schools, and clean water projects in Haiti. 
  • Global Sistergoods is donating 10% of all sales to Mercy Corps' Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort.
  • Fair Trade Winds is donating 10% of all profits from the sales of Haitian oil drum wall art to Lutheran World Federation to support their work providing emergency supplies and long-term aid on the ground. Donations will continue all year long.
  • The Leakey Collection will donate 10% of all orders of its Valentine's Day necklace placed through its website to Partners in Health. At checkout, click the box “Do you want to add a gift message?” and type “Haiti.”
  • Acholi Beads will donate 100% of Acholi Gras proceeds to the Haiti relief efforts of Partners in Health.
  • Pursea Organics offers an “I Helped Haiti” Bag wherein 20% of the proceeds are donated to help victims.
  • One World Goods of Rochester, NY will donate 20% of total sales to SERRV International for Haiti relief
You can also support Haitian artisans by purchasing their products.

The Fair Trade Federation also has several members that work with producers in Haiti, including
  • Caribbean Craft Co, a Haitian women-owned company , sells metal and paper mache sculptures, wooden kitchenware and home decor, oil drum art, nativities, keychains, magnets, and other items in order to address the country's rampant unemployment.
  • One World Projects works with artisans across the island to create beautiful, sustainably-made jewelry, gifts, baskets, and decor.
  • Handcrafting Justice offers hand-painted items from the Forest of Artists Boys Painting Group of Gros Morne. This painting group allows young men to support their families and fund their own education through their artistic gifts.
  • A World Away sells cut metal ironwork from Croix des Bouquets, a small village outside of Port-au-Prince.
  • Other members also offer fun, decorative recycled metal wall art, including World Village Market, Pacha World, Mango Tree Imports, and Gifts with Humanity.
  • Two Hands Worldshop sells Caribbean-style dolls, handmade outside of Port-au-Prince
  • Ten Thousand Villages has offered ornaments, decor, housewares, and baskets from Haiti for more than thirty years.
